I guess I am the only person who did not enjoy this dvd.

It felt more like a modern dance class than yoga.

Shiva did not do any prep to open up the hips and thighs before moving into some fairly advanced poses. She also didn’t hold any pose long enough to really be able to breath into them and her instruction was basically non existent.

There was no “flow”, the transitions from one pose to another were cumbersome and unnatural. At least in the practice I did, which is the 51 minute water-heart-air-forwards bends, there were no true vinyasas – I would not have called it “vinyasa flow”.

I am a Yoga Instructor myself and, after hearing so much about Shiva Rea, I was really looking forward to getting this DVD. I truly wish I could have given it a more positive review. I let a couple of my students try it also and they too did not enjoy it.

Perhaps it is because I am used to a more Ashtanga based practice, but this really didn’t feel anything like yoga to me.

Daily Energy: Vinyasa Flow Yoga with Shiva Rea is a 168 minute Yoga practice DVD offered by Acacia / Acorn Media.

Shiva Rea is a world renowned yoga teacher. She has been hailed by Vanity Fair magazine as one of the world’s greatest yoga masters. Shiva Rea has created several top selling workouts and is the headliner at major yoga conferences. She teaches workshops all over the world and is the catalyst for the Globa Mala Project, an annual worldwide yoga event.

Daily Energy: Vinyasa Flow Yoga features seven 20 minute yoga practices. This DVD caters to people with busy lifestyles who want a workout that never gets boring and can be done in a short amount of time.

There are several ways you can use this DVD. There are seven 20 minute yoga practices so you can simply choose a pre-set practice or you can use the yoga matrix that allows you to create endless possibilities for longer practices. You simply use your DVD remote control to select from each individual yoga segment and stack them together to make a longer routine.

The 20 minute practices are earth, shanti, heart-air, fire & water, water, fire and chakra namaskar. There are extra segments on solar meditation (5 minutes), Lunar Meditation (5 minutes), Core (7 minutes), Forward Bends (6 minutes) and Shavasana (5 minutes).

Don’t let the words meditation fool you, solar meditation is basically warm up / stretching and lunar meditation is a cool down. There’s nothing meditative about them. You will feel the pull (at least I did).

You also have the option to listen to the yoga routines with the music only or the music and instruction. While yoga is a form of exercise, it’s also a mental discipline that may have references that some Christians are uncomfortable with. With the option to listen only to the music while watching the DVD, you can eliminate the discussion that goes along with the routines and simply enjoy the exercise aspects of yoga.

The individual routines are very easy to follow. The pace of the yoga instruction is nice and slow so I had plenty of time to figure out what I was supposed to do. Unless you are very limber (or very young), expect that you won’t be able to get into some of the positions she gets into. I exercise regularly and my forehead just isn’t going to the floor like hers does.

Despite that, this is a great DVD for beginners because even if you can’t completely mimic the positions she gets into, you will feel the stretch and pull in your muscles by simply trying as much as you are able. I’m far from competent in yoga and I got a good workout from the Daily Energy: Vinyasa Flow Yoga.

    Challenging
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am relatively new to yoga and love it. I think it is the best all-around exercise that exists. I have attended a couple of classes and have 2 or 3 videos. I also have checked out various books from the library on yoga. I find all resources helpful. I had not seen any of Shiva Rea’s videos until I bought this one, and according to the reviews this is the best yet. I love this video. I find some of the segments extremely challenging, but instead of discouraging me, she makes me feel that I could actually become as good as she is one day. After all, she’s been at it for many years. The matrix is great, because it lets you select what you want to work on. I haven’t even tried the preset practices, because I feel I can make my own combinations on the matrix. Shiva Rea is extremely limber. Watching her, you might think you could never be that flexible, but the way she progresses from one asana to another, you continually work to your edge. After about 2 weeks of doing this video (not every day), I already see a big difference in my ability to stretch, and I had already been doing stretch exercises for some time. Somehow, the way she leads you through it, you don’t notice the pain as much. For the first time I understand what yoga practitioners mean by being “in the present”, about focusing on your breathing. It is truly liberating, because it means your not just lying or sitting there in a stretch position thinking, “Ow. This hurts. How soon can I get out of this position?” Also, I’d like to add that her voice is excellent for this type of video. I have many exercise videos, and very few of the instructors’ voices bother me, but hers is exceptionally soothing. It is low and calm. I usually have to exercise while my husband is trying to sleep, and because her voice is so low-pitched, I don’t feel nervous about the t.v. waking him up like I do with some of my other videos. The music is perfect, too. It’s not distracting, but rather is perfect for background. The video would be less appealing without it. I suppose this might not be the best video for a total beginner, but I have very little experience and it works well for me. Once you know the basic asanas or poses, you can do this. I don’t say you can do every bit of each segment, but that is the beauty of it. You push yourself to do just as much as you can, and it’s amazing how much more you can do each time you practice. I am really inspired. Ever since I started yoga, I’ve thought that I’d like to be an instructor one day, but thought I’d never be good enough. This video has inspired me. I’m thinking, though it may be years, that one day I’ll be able to do this well enough to teach others who want to learn it. This video is worth the investment. Oh, and just as an aside, I was influenced by the plug for this video in last month’s Fitness Magazine.

If your looking for a full yoga class experience, this is not the video for you. There are a few segments you can choose from with this video. None of them have the starting yoga warm-up, or ending stretching and cool down. If you are just wanting to get down to business and do the standing poses and many chataraungas, then this is your video. The nice part of it, yes sometimes (many) I am timed crunched and only have time for this part. Shiva Rea Yoga Shakti is her best work in my opinion. I have several of her videos, and that is the only one I really love. I am a strong yogi. Shakti offers challenge. This video really does not, but is still a good workout. This is a video for intermediate yogis.

A worthwhile additon to your yoga DVD collection
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Shiva Rea is an evolution of yoga. She continues on her journey with this DVD. Whereas Flow yoga was an exploration of the water element, this disc hits all 4 elements. It has a slower pace than her former discs, and the movements are focused and deep. If not for the fire routine, I would find myself dissatisfied from the aspect of not having worked myself up into a sweat, so it’s not a surprise that the fire routine is included in most of the pre-set practices. I still find this disc a bit too easy, especially for Shiva Rea fans like myself who have been doing Yoga Shakti for years. Also, the segments are independent units, which means that there has been no particular workout designed. Thus, you may find yourself repeating poses you just did in the previous segment. I must say that I think that the half split pose is done too frequently!

There is a lot of depth in the commentary. If you are a fire person like I am, you will have to let yourself slow down to tap into what she is doing. There are seven 20 minute routines plus 6 minute core and 6 minutes of forward bends (plus shavasnana and solar and lunar meditation segments). For Shiva Rea fans, I would say that this is going in the direction of her latest discs–much of the same evolution, with some new elements. The fire segment includes prostration pushups (this time only 6 rounds), which I like this better that either Surf Soul or Creative Core and Upper Body. I like doing the Heart-Air followed by Fire, core, forward bends and then Shanti. On days when I don’t want to so the push-ups, I can substitute the fire-water and then use the 4 element combined segment instead of Shanti (which is relaxing). I find the Earth sequence to be a bit too slow and not challenging enough for me, and to a lesser extent the water sequence.

The music is nice – very earthy with somewhat of a primitive theme. At one point it sounds like we are hearing rustling branches! The apparently found a nice stage designer though, because the color combinations are just super, and they even carry into Shiva’s clothing and mat.

Overall, Daily Energy is not as physically challenging as many of her other discs. It appears to be designed to accommodate beginners. I do find some of the slower segments to have a deep wisdom that I might not have had patience for had I not slowed myself down and tapped into the slightly new direction that Shiva is taking us.

I am a bit bothered by the fact that this seems to have been filmed in what looks like a temple surrounded by idols, some of which even have fruit placed in front of them. Frankly, I find this offensive. But even so, I wouldn’t give up what the disc has to offer–I just try not to look at the idols too much!

Daily Energy was the first Shiva Rea yoga DVD I have purchased, and I am very impressed. Pitched at the experienced beginner to advanced intermediate, there is an excellent range of intensity options available, giving lots of room to grow within the one DVD. I especially liked the yoga matrix, and being able to line up different elements to create a customised workout each morning. This DVD is fantastic value for money, and Shiva’s style is easy on the ears and the eyes, while being good and challenging (for me anyway!) on the body. I will be getting a lot of use out of this one. Highly recommended for busy people wanting to advance their daily practice.

I enjoyed this DVD as I have all other Shiva Rea DVDs; this was a bit easier to follow. I like the way it is broken up since I don’t usually get an entire hour or so to myself!

    Mostly Excellent

I own several of Shiva’s dvds now and was expecting quite alot from this program. While I do appreciate the fact that there are so many options a preset practices I don’t like the pace of the vinyasa. At time when Shiva is speaking she is already trasitioning to the next pose, other times she is a step or two behind. Also there is not much time to readjust yourself should you need to. Because this DVD is a slighlty faster pace than usual this is definitaly not for beginningers to Shiva but it is still a wonderful program. The visual quality was stunning, however I really prefer natural backgrounds.

    Enjoy your journey

    Amazing Yoga

I have been practicing yoga for years and enjoyed many wonderful DVDs to aide me in my practice. This new Shiva Rea Daily Energy is yet another wonderful addition to her collection of DVDs. This has to be one of my favorites. The matrix makes it easy to choose which ‘class’ you want to take. You can spend 20 min. or take a mixture of practices. There are always modifications and more advanced moves if you are ready. Practicing with Shiva Rea has taken my yoga to a higher level. Her calming, inspiring words make this more than a work out.

Inspiring practice sequences that you can easily incorporate into a daily at-home practice. Everything is customizable with an incredibly cool matrix (why doesn’t every workout DVD have this?) where you can select which pieces you want to practice in a given session. She includes tons of modifications so moderately experienced folks can have a good experience as well as start to advance their practice. It works for good days and bad and allows you to just do 20 minutes if you like and still come away feeling like you’ve had an experience. Or assemble a lengthy practice to really build up heat and breath like you do in class. Inspiring and functional — you can’t ask for anything more!

    Wonderful FLOW routines
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been doing yoga now for about 3 yrs and am just about to envoke on a yoga certification program. For home practice I really like Shiva Rea. If you’re all about flow and fluid movement this DVD is it! I love the ability to customize the practices – and the preset ones as well! It gives the user a lot of variety. If you enjoy yoga flow type classes and enjoy a spiritual and dance like practice you’ll love Shiva Rea. I have three of her DVDs and they all rock, but I really like this one the best so far.

Caution – I would say that this dvd is more for intermediate yogis – you can try this if you’re a newbie- but her poses and how she flows through this a little more advanced.

    So practical and well done.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my first “at home” video. I took one basic yoga class a year ago and needed a cheap way to move around (I got out of shape).

This video is great, very practical, there are short sequences and 20 minutes exercises you can mix and match. It is pretty intense sometimes but short, for what I know, it takes basic yoga poses and pump them up a little bit. If you’re new, just start with a 20 minutes, and that’s it! I did too much the first time and got all sore the next day.

I’m excited about this video and can’t wait to know them better so I can just close my eyes and get used to the movements and postures. I am very pleased with it.

Shiva Rea Daily Energy yoga DVD
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this DVD! Most yoga classes I have been to last for 90 minutes, and I usually don’t have time in my days for that. On this DVD there are 7 20-minute practices that you can supplement with warm-up, extra practice and shavasana, or just do the 20-minute practice if that’s the only time you have. I was surprised at what a good workout just the 20-minute practices can be. All 7 of them are excellent. On the mornings that I do one of these brief practices, I feel more centered, younger and supple throughout my day. However, you probably need to have at least some yoga experience before you order these tapes because Shiva Rea doesn’t provide very much explanation. The practices are do-able, but each has a challenging pose or two in it that I am unable to do yet. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone who already knows some yoga poses, but doesn’t have time to attend yoga classes on a regular basis.

  20. Just Breathe says:

Great for days when you are short on time
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have thoroughly enjoyed this DVD and expect to use it until DVD players are extinct. I typically use a DVD to supplement my practice once per week and this DVD is great for those days where you want a balanced practice, yet feel short on time. When I try to practice for only 1/2 hour on my own, I find that I usually only get through a sun salutes and end up not getting to other portions of my practice because I get lost in time. This DVD helps me move along on those short-for-time days and incorporate a centering, warm-up, standing poses, backbends, forward bends and twists. The only thing I have to really add in myself are inversions.

I love all of the flow options as they are all unique and for different moods and needs. The “Shanti” flow is so amazing and delightful with long holding of pigeon and beautiful music. I think the colors on this set are mesmerizing and inspiring, although honestly I am barely looking at the screen. Enjoy this DVD. If you are on the fence about buying it I noticed it on FitTv and Discovery Health Channel when I was home sick the other day.
